Christine Jorgensen (1927-1989) is famous for being one of the first people to have sexual reassignment surgery in this case being male to female. A media sensation was created on December 1, 1952 when the New York Daily News carried a front page story announcing that in Denmark Jorgensen became the recipient of the first successful sex-change operation. But she was up to the attention and she became a very willing spokesperson for transgendered people. Christine died of cancer in 1989 at age 62.
