Eoin Colfer (born May 14, 1965, Wexford, Ireland) is an Irish author. He is most famous for having written the Artemis Fowl series.

Colfer is an Irish author who deplores comparison of his popular, pseudo sci-fi, fairy tale to the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. The Artemis Fowl series was written as a modern 'fairy tale' and involves Dwarfs, Fairies, and Leprechaun officers along with a tech-savvy Centaur and a 13-year-old criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl. The Fairy technology, which includes the ability to hack into Interpol, take over Closed Circuit Television, and even 'vaporize a bull elephant'. His appeal as a more knowledgeable, more science-oriented author has made many prefer his works to Rowling's more traditional fairy tales.

Colfer's books are replete with complex moral issues. At one point, Artemis wishes to preserve his memories, while the Fairy's wish to 'mind wipe' him. Artemis, contemplating this issue, finally acquiesces, but plays a trick too. This kind of hidden chicanery and moral relativism is not found in any other children's work.
