Gladiator was a popular movie that appeared in 2000, directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. It was nominated for a number of Academy Awards including: The movie is loosely based on the life of the deranged Roman emperor Commodus (ruled between 180-192 AD, played by Phoenix), who scandalized Roman society by appearing in the Colosseum as a gladiator.

His father, emperor Marcus Aurelius appears in the film as a character played by Richard Harris.

The sound track was composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard.
