The municipality covers an area of 59.05 km² (of which 0.29 km² water). The municipality of Houten also includes the following towns, villages and townships: 't Goy, Schalkwijk, Tull en 't Waal. A tram operates between the Houten train station (htn) and Houten Castellum (htnc), parallel to the railroad. It is temporary until the railroad itself gets more tracks.
