\nJackson County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Andrew Jackson, general in the United States Army and President of the United States of America. As of 2000 the population was 53,926. Its county seat is Scottsboro. Jackson County covers parts of former Decatur County.

\nJackson County was established on December 13, 1819.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,918 km² (1,127 mi²). 2,794 km² (1,079 mi²) of it is land and 124 km² (48 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.26% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 53,926 people, 21,615 households, and 15,822 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (50/mi²). There are 24,168 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.89% White, 3.74% Black or African American, 1.75% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 21,615 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.00% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.80% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.92. In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,020, and the median income for a family is $38,082. Males have a median income of $29,777 versus $20,990 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,000. 13.70% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.20% are under the age of 18 and 21.00% are 65 or older.
