Born in Lynwood, California, his most popular success was in the epic Dances with Wolves which he directed and starred in. Many of his latest movie efforts have enjoyed little success. Science-fiction epic Waterworld lost the most money of any movie up to its time. The Postman was another disappointment at the box office. He was shot in several scenes which were planned as flashbacks, but they never made it to the final cut. He was the friend who committed suicide, the event which the plot of the movie revolves.
