Geography La Quinta is located at 33°40'31" North, 116°17'51" West (33.675373, -116.297391)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 83.4 km² (32.2 mi²). 82.2 km² (31.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 23,694 people, 8,445 households, and 6,553 families residing in the city. The population density is 288.1/km² (746.2/mi²). There are 11,812 housing units at an average density of 143.6/km² (372.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.51% White, 1.42% African American, 0.72% Native American, 1.88% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 13.85% from other races, and 3.53% from two or more races. 32.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,445 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% are non-families. 17.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.16. In the city the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $54,552, and the median income for a family is $56,848. Males have a median income of $40,553 versus $31,627 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,284. 7.8% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line.
