LimeWire is an open source Gnutella network client. It is written in Java, and is hence largely platform-independent. Like BearShare which is developed by FreePeers, Inc., LimeWire is also commercial software created by LimeWire LLC. LimeWire and BearShare have been the two leading vendors driving Gnutella protocol development after the GDF was founded by Clip2's Kelly Truelove.

Initially freeware, LimeWire is now selling the software package. A free version is also available, bundling third-party software named LimeShop. The LimeWire source code was published under the GPL and is available at LimeWire's development site.
