Monticello is a town located in Lawrence County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,726. It is the county seat of Lawrence County6.

The racial makeup of the town is 64.19% White, 34.18% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 0.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 690 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 19.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 32.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.01.
