The Polaroid Corporation was founded in Boston by Edwin H. Land in 1937. It produces sunglasses based on Polaroid polarisers, and instant-print photographic film and instant cameras.

The company filed for federal bankruptcy protection in October 11, 2001, but most of the business is carried on by a new Polaroid company managed by Bank One. Criticism has been raised over the way this process was undertaken, especially since it seems that the process has left the executives of the company with healthy bonuses, while stock holders, company retirees and employees were left with nothing.
