Propitiation is a theological term describing an atoning sacrifice.

Generally, Christian belief is that the death of Jesus Christ on the cross is viewed as appeasing the justice of God, and effecting a reconciliation between God and mankind.

Christian theology relates this to the 'mercy seat' or propitiatory in the Holy of Holies in the Jewish temple.

This idea about sin and man's actions is associated in some Christian theological systems with Indemnity, and Imputation.
