Rock Springs is a city located in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,708.

On September 2, 1885, 150 white miners attacked their Chinese coworkers, killing 28, wounding 15, and forcing several hundred more out of town.

Geography

Rock Springs is located at 41°35'27" North, 109°13'21" West (41.590930, -109.222398)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 47.8 km² (18.4 mi²). 47.8 km² (18.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 18,708 people, 7,348 households, and 4,930 families residing in the city. The population density is 391.7/km² (1,014.4/mi²). There are 8,359 housing units at an average density of 175.0/km² (453.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.75% White, 1.07% African American, 0.86% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.05% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 8.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,348 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $42,584, and the median income for a family is $51,539. Males have a median income of $44,809 versus $22,609 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,396. 9.4% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line.
