San Rafael is the county seat of Marin County, California. The city is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 56,063.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 58.1 km² (22.4 mi²). 43.0 km² (16.6 mi²) of it is land and 15.1 km² (5.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 26.04% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 56,063 people, 22,371 households, and 12,773 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,304.8/km² (3,378.9/mi²). There are 22,948 housing units at an average density of 534.1/km² (1,383.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.76% White, 2.24% African American, 0.56% Native American, 5.59% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 11.16% from other races, and 4.53% from two or more races. 23.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 22,371 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the city the population is spread out with 19.5% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 33.3% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $60,994, and the median income for a family is $74,398. Males have a median income of $50,650 versus $39,912 for females. The per capita income for the city is $35,762. 10.2% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.7% are under the age of 18 and 5.0% are 65 or older.
