Shelton is a city located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 38,101.

United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 82.7 km² (31.9 mi²). 79.2 km² (30.6 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.26% water.

census of 2000, there are 38,101 people, 14,190 households, and 10,543 families residing in the city. The population density is 481.2/km² (1,246.4/mi²). There are 14,707 housing units at an average density of 185.8 persons/km² (481.1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.44% White, 1.12% African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 3.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,190 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 25.7% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.11.
