Tarija is a city in southern Bolivia, located 22.73° South 64.35°West. It was named after Francisco de Tarija. The city was founded in 1574. There are about 140,000 inhabitants in Tarija.


Tarija is also a department of in Bolivia. It is located in southern Bolivia bordering Argentina. There are about 368 000 inhabitants and has an area of 37.623 km˛. The city of Tarija is the capital of the department.

The department is divided into six provinces.
