Telford is a planned town in Shropshire England that was named after the engineer Thomas Telford. The town has a population of around 125,000. It is administered as part of the Telford and Wrekin unitary authority.

It was built in the 1960s and 1970s as a New town in a former coal-mining area and enveloped the previous towns of Dawley, Oakengates and Wellington. In 1983 the M54 motorway opened, connecting the town to the M6 and thence the rest of the UK's motorway network.
