\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 855 km² (330 mi²). 853 km² (329 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 60,687 people, 21,307 households, and 17,002 families residing in the county. The population density is 71/km² (184/mi²). There are 22,500 housing units at an average density of 26/km² (68/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.03% White, 14.42% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,307 households out of which 39.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.70% are married couples living together, 12.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.20% are non-families. 16.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
