It is sometimes placed as a class, Gnetopsida, in the division Spermatophyta. It consists of two orders: Gnetales -- containing two families, Welwitschiaceae, consisting only of the genus Welwitschia, and Gnetaceae, consisting only of the genus Gnetum Ephedrales -- containing only the family Ephedraceae and the genus Ephedra.
